Midvaal cracks down on non-compliant businesses in Meyerton CBD
A multi-stakeholder operation in Meyerton this week uncovered serious breaches of health, safety, and municipal regulations, prompting swift action against businesses putting the public at risk.
MEYERTON — The Midvaal Local Municipality carried out a coordinated compliance operation in the Meyerton Central Business District (CBD) on Thursday, led by Executive Mayor Peter Teixeira and members of the Mayoral Committee.
Officials from multiple departments, including municipal inspectors, the South African Police Service (SAPS) with its K9 Unit, Blue Shield compliance officers, health and building inspectors, and the fire and engineering departments, participated in the operation. The goal was to ensure businesses follow municipal by-laws and operate safely for residents.

During inspections, authorities discovered a range of violations. Some shops were unhygienic, lacked fire safety equipment, or sold expired food products. In several cases, people were found living or sleeping inside business premises, and some shops were operating in buildings without proper municipal approval.
As a result, 12 compliance notices were issued, and seven businesses were immediately shut down due to the risk they posed to public safety. These establishments will remain closed until they meet all regulatory standards. The operation also flagged areas where illegal drug activity is suspected, which will be investigated further by SAPS.

Mayor Teixeira stressed that these enforcement measures are part of ongoing efforts to protect residents and maintain order in the municipality. “We are committed to ensuring that all businesses comply with regulations and provide a safe environment for our communities,” he said.
The municipality confirmed that similar inspections will continue across Midvaal to reinforce lawful business practices, safeguard public health, and maintain safety standards in commercial areas.
