Yellow level 4 rain warning issued for Gauteng

A Yellow Level 4 weather warning has been issued for Gauteng as heavy rain continues to lash the province.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 4 weather warning for disruptive rainfall across the entire Gauteng province, effective on Sunday, 21 December.

According to SAWS, persistent and heavy rain is expected to continue throughout the day, increasing the risk of localised flooding, particularly in low-lying and poorly drained areas. Reports of flooding have already been received from several parts of the province.

Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution on the roads, as wet and slippery conditions may lead to reduced visibility and longer stopping distances. Authorities have warned road users not to attempt to cross flooded roads or bridges, whether on foot or in a vehicle, as water levels can rise rapidly and conditions may become life-threatening.

Residents are also advised to secure loose items, remain alert to changing weather conditions, and avoid unnecessary travel where possible.

The weather warning remains in effect until midnight on Sunday, with further updates expected should conditions deteriorate.

SAWS has appealed to the public to stay informed through official weather channels and to prioritise safety during the ongoing rainfall.
