Dog incident highlights by-law obligations in Boltonwold
Municipal by-laws place the responsibility on owners to ensure their dogs do not pose a threat or cause fear in public spaces.
MEYERTON – A recent incident involving an aggressive dog at Boltonwold Agricultural Holdings has drawn attention to municipal by-laws regulating animals in public spaces.
The incident occurred on December 27 at 15:30 on 4th Road when a resident was jogging and encountered a medium-sized black dog.
According to the resident, the dog lunged at him in a threatening manner, prompting him to shout in an attempt to scare the animal away.
Shortly thereafter, a young man emerged from the property and indicated that the dog does not usually behave aggressively. A verbal exchange followed before the runner left the scene and reported the matter to the municipality’s by-laws department.
No physical injury was sustained, but the incident was described as intimidating and has raised concerns about the safety of pedestrians and other road users in the area.
Municipal by-laws stipulate that animals in public amenities or spaces must not cause fear or pose a nuisance. Dogs must be kept under control at all times, and animals that instil fear in members of the public may be impounded by authorised officials.
Residents are encouraged to familiarise themselves with local by-laws and to ensure that pets are securely confined to private property to prevent similar incidents.
