Man shot and killed on R59 near Meyerton

Car trouble led to a fatal shooting on the R59 near the Johan le Roux off-ramp, leaving one man dead and a teenager injured.

MEYERTON – A 23-year-old man was shot and killed in a late-night shooting on the R59 freeway on Saturday night.

A 16-year-old boy was also wounded during the incident.

The incident happened near the Johan le Roux offramp.

Constable Nompumelelo Zazini, a spokesperson for the Meyerton, says it is alleged that the driver of a silver VW Polo with four occupants ad stopped on the off-ramp after the vehicle had overheated.

One of the passengers, Xolani Dube (23), allegedly crossed the freeway to request water from occupants of a white Toyota Corolla that had stopped on the opposite side of the road.

He was shot and died at the scene.

The vehicle reportedly drove off towards Vereeniging before returning to the Johan Le Roux off-ramp, where further shots were fired.

The driver’s 16-year-old son sustained a gunshot wound to his arm and was transported to hospital for medical treatment. The driver and another passenger were unharmed.

Police recovered 13 spent 9mm cartridges at the scene.

Meyerton Station Commander Colonel Senzangakona Christopher Mohale has appealed to the public for any information that may assist the investigation.

No arrests have been made.
