Illegal dump blocks access to Sebokeng Clinic

Residents say piles of waste are blocking access to the clinic.

The DA is calling on the Emfuleni Local Municipality to urgently remove an illegal dumping site near the Sebokeng Zone 13 Clinic, which it says is obstructing access to the facility and posing a health risk to residents.

According to Dady Mollo the DA’s political head in Emfuleni Central, refuse has been piling up unchecked at the clinic entrance for weeks.

Moll says: “The waste now forms a physical barrier and releases a foul stench that has infiltrated the facility itself. This is a direct threat to public health and violates residents’ constitutional right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being.”

Mollo says this is a severe health risk. “Elderly patients, pregnant women, and mothers with newborns must walk through decaying waste, used diapers, and sharp objects to reach healthcare services,” he added.

He also raised concerns over concern over pest infestation: “The site breeds rodents and flies, raising the risk of infection and disease transmission,” Mollo says.

Accroding to Mollo the situation compromises healthcare: “No healthcare facility can maintain hygiene standards with an uncontrolled dumpsite at its door,” he added.

Mollo says this continues despite Emfuleni Local Municipality’s claims of major spending on waste contractors and fleet expansion.

“On the ground in Zone 13, residents face the results of poor planning and zero accountability,” Mollo says.

The DA is demanding that the municipality deploy a waste removal team within 48 hours, implement measures to prevent further dumping at the clinic, and publish a reliable refuse collection schedule for Ward 32.
