Comrades Marathon introduces three-group start for 2026 Up Run
Building on last year’s staggered start trial, the Comrades Marathon will move to a three-group start in 2026 aimed at easing congestion and improving runner flow on race day.
DURBAN – The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) last week confirmed athree-group start format for the 2026 Up Run.
The CMA introduced the staggered start model last year as a trial, with runners starting in two waves.
The 2026 edition, taking place on Sunday, 14 June, will be the 99th running of the iconic ultra-marathon and the 50th Up Run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
The 85.777km race will continue to allow runners 12 hours to complete the course, with each start group operating on its own official race time from the moment it crosses the start line.
The revised start structure replaces the two-group system introduced in 2025 and will see runners depart in three waves.
Group 1 will set off at 05h00, Group 2 will set off at 05h15 and Group 3 will set off at 05h30.
CMA Race Director Sue Forge said the staggered format is expected to reduce congestion at the start, improve runner flow through narrow sections of the route, and enhance access for medical and emergency services.
