VANDERBIJLPARK. – Fanie Roos, a lecturer in Sport Management at the North-West University (NWU), is serious about golf – both on the course and in the lecture room.

Two years ago, Fanie made headlines when he became the first NWU academic representative to address the prestigious Professional Golfers Association of South Africa (PGA-SA), and ever since he has been closely involved with the association.

In 2019 he was nominated as Coach of the Year in the Gauteng central region and this year will see him take on the role of golf educator and assessor for the PGA-SA Apprentice Programme.

According to Fanie, who has already hosted three online education sessions, he will assist in lecturing the following subjects for Year 1 and Year 2 students: Introduction to Coaching, Session Planning and Coaching, Long-Term Athlete Development, and Coaching Children.

Standing on the PGA stage and now being one of the lecturers to nurture future PGA professionals have been a lifelong dream come true for Fanie, who has been playing golf since the tender age of six.

From the golf course to the lecture room

Fanie is currently conducting research for his doctoral thesis on golf. His focus area is the development and support of young players. His master’s thesis focussed on managing golf players’ transition from junior to a professional level and can be viewed at the following link: https://hdl.handle.net/2263/70479

He started his coaching career 15 years ago and is a class AAA PGA professional. After a stint as a teacher at Emfulenipark Primary, he kicked off his academic career as a lecturer at the NWU in 2014.
