Armed robberies becoming a huge concern

The victim, hitch-hiking, thought nothing suspicious as he was looking for a lift. Upon entering the vehicle, one suspect allegedly pointed his firearm at the victim.

In the previous week, it has been reported that robberies with a firearm have risen to five in total.

In the week that followed, two more cases have been reported.

Robbers are finding that stealing is much easier when threatening an innocent victim with their life.

On Tuesday, September 19 at 22:00 a resident returning from Siyabuswa was standing next to a petrol station on Leyland Street in the Central Business District (CBD) when he was allegedly robbed of his belongings.

According to the victim, a blue Polo vehicle stopped beside him.

The victim, hitch-hiking, thought nothing suspicious as he was looking for a lift.

Upon entering the vehicle, one suspect allegedly pointed his firearm at the victim.

“They said that they did not want to kill me. I just had to do what they instructed me to do,” said the victim, who wishes to remain anonymous. He also said that he had to give them his phone, R270 cash, and his bank cards.

“When they sped off, I could not see their license plate number. They were also speaking in Siswati,” said the victim while recounting the horrible event. Luckily, the victim did not sustain any injuries.

Investigations are ongoing.

Another trend becoming more common with thieves is to stalk victims who visit a bank.

In this case, robbers followed the victim and his girlfriend from the Highveld Mall to his residence on Montgomery Street in Extension 5 on Thursday, September 21.

The victim alleges that he withdrew money at an ATM located at the Highveld Mall and headed home with his girlfriend.

Upon getting to their destination, the driver asked his girlfriend to open the gate.

Upon parking the car inside his yard, the victim alleges that he noticed a silver Golf 5 vehicle parked at his gate.

“Four males were inside and three stepped out of the vehicle. One male then pointed at me with his firearm and instructed me to look down,” said the anonymous victim.

He also said that his girlfriend ran away in the meantime while the robbers were busy robbing the victim of the withdrawn cash, wallet, and cellphone.

The alleged robbers then drove away with his belongings.

The suspects remain unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.

Luckily, no injuries have been reported.

The estimated total of goods taken was R8 600.
