Ward 33 faces repeated vandalism of mini-substations

As a result, the DA in eMalahleni has proposed the establishment of a specialised Electrical Protection Unit (EPU) to reduce electricity losses, protect infrastructure, and provide accurate data to measure technical and non-technical losses.

Ward 33 is still grappling with an ongoing power crisis as mini-substations continue to be vandalised.

The latest incident occurred on July 1 in Opperman Street, Klipfontein, where cables were cut and the main breaker was stolen, leaving the unit exposed and unsafe.

According to the area’s ward councillor, Kim Fourie, this is not the first time the substation has been hit.

On May 7, an identical case of vandalism was reported at the site, underscoring a troubling pattern of repeat attacks.

The problem is spreading beyond Klipfontein Extension 8. Extension 16 has also been affected, with Ackerman Street experiencing similar vandalism.

Fourie confirmed that these repeated incidents have left residents frustrated and facing service interruptions, unsafe electrical setups, and mounting financial losses.

Fourie is calling for immediate intervention to implement preventive measures to protect critical infrastructure from further damage.

She warns that without stronger safeguards, the community risks ongoing disruptions to the power supply.

The Witbank SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer David Ratau, said that tampering with or damaging government and private infrastructure is a criminal offence.

He further urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity, particularly individuals seen tampering with, stealing or vandalising electricity supply lines, meter boxes or other municipal assets.

Residents can report incidents directly to the Witbank Police Station on 079 891 5570 or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
