Grant has worked for various South African newspapers for over 40 years, including a 30-year stint at The Star in which time he was Group Golf Writer for the Independent Group.
His time at The Star more or less coincided with 30 golden years of South African golf when Ernie Els reached No 1 in the world and Retief Goosen, Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and Trevor Immelman won Majors, and our boys won multiple Dunhill Cups and World Cups.
Grant went on over 60 overseas trips to watch our golfers in action, and witnessed all but one of the Big Easy’s record seven World Match Play victories.
Today he is a freelancer, keeping tabs on our current crop of players including golden girl Cass Alexander.
He has written two books, South African Golf Courses, and a biography of eccentric four-time Major champion, Bobby Locke, and he helped co-author the Sunshine Boys.
Grant plays golf two or three times a week with an enthusiastic bunch of retirees at Randpark in Johannesburg. “I’m a steady Eddie down the middle but, sadly, the ball goes nowhere these days!”
