Chiefs need to get back to winning ways

Amakhosi are clear favourites to beat Siwelele.

Kaizer Chiefs will look to return to winning ways in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday evening when they host Siwelele FC at FNB Stadium.

Amakhosi had a fast start to the season, picking up 13 points from a possible 15. Since then, however, they have not won any of their last three league games, while also crashing out of the Carling Knockout on penalties to Stellenbosch FC.

Head coach Nasreddine Nabi’s departure from the club was confirmed during the October international break, though in reality the Tunisian left Chiefs after the 3-1 loss at home to Sekhukhune United on September 16.

Co-head coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef have been tasked with taking the reins at Chiefs until the end of the season. So far, they have worked better when only temporarily in charge. The pair won three league games in a row at the start of the season, when Nabi had to return home after his wife was involved in a serious road accident.

Their only win since Nabi left the club for good has come in the Caf Confederation Cup, a 1-0 home win over Angola’s Kabuscorp that was enough to see Amakhosi into the next round on penalties.

Chiefs have a chance to make it into the Confederation Cup group stages on Sunday, when they host DR Congo’s AS Simba at Dobsonville Stadium. A goalless draw in Lubumbashi in the first leg of their final qualifier on Saturday gives Chiefs an excellent chance to progress at home.

First, however, comes a return to domestic action against Siwelele. Lehlohonolo Seema’s side, who bought SuerSport United’s status to claim a place in the top flight, had a poor start to the season.

They won their first match against Golden Arrows, but then picked up just a single point from their next seven matches.

Siwelele then beat Marumo Gallants 1-0 in a Premiership Mangaung derby on September 28, before being knocked out of the Carling Knockout by Orlando Pirates.

Chiefs are clear favourites to beat Siwelele, with the latest Betway odds having them at 1.44 to Siwelele’s 7.60. A draw is at 4.10.
