Wendy Whitehead saddles three runners in Race 6 at the Greyville Polytrack meeting on Wednesday and they look likely to have a big say in the Swinger, Exacta, Trifecta and Quartet outcomes.
The Summerveld trainer’s best winning chance in the FM69 Handicap is with Hot Money, a five-year-old mare who has two wins and a clutch of placings to her name.
Hot Money’s last win came in May, after which she was given a short rest before resuming her honest and consistent campaigning. Her last outing, at the end of August, was her peak run and she looked all over the winner but went down narrowly.
She and jockey Donavan Dillon will be a popular choice to set that result straight as she is course-and-distance suited to this 1600m.
Among her principal adversaries is stablemate To The Max, a mare whose three successes have all been on the Greyville Poly.
Her last run – eighth, some five lengths behand the winner – can be ignored as it was on turf. Before that, she was runner-up to Bell Jar over 1700m despite a saddle slip 600m out. With S’manga Khumalo jumping her from the No 2 stall, To The Max will surely have a say in the finish.
Whitehead’s third runner is Tombola, who will be at longer odds but warrants a close look. She also had a saddle slip in the race won by Bell Jar, but, before that, had been building up some decent form on the Poly. Indeed, three of her four career wins have been on this surface.
