According to the police, four men entered a shop at about 8.30am and enquired about the cost of certain goods.
One of them then produced a firearm and pointed it at the complainant. He also hit the complainant over the head with the weapon.
The robbers then took R800 in cash, airtime to the value of R1 500 and 150 cellular phones, before they fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Polo.
According to the police, a lookout was issued for the Volkswagen Polo and members of the Germiston Flying Squad spotted the vehicle as it took the Rondebult Road turn-off from the N17.
The members followed the Polo and when they were close enough to the suspects, instructed them to pull over, said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station.
The driver of the vehicle ignored the instruction and sped away.
The police officers gave chase and the Polo failed to stop at several red traffic lights.
The driver of the police vehicle then tried to force the Polo off the road, after which one of the suspects, sitting in the passenger seat, opened the door and fired shots at the police.
The members slowed down but still followed the vehicle,” said Joubert.
“The driver of the suspect vehicle attempted to turn right into Barry Marais Road, at the corner of Kingfisher Avenue and Barry Marais Road, but lost control of the vehicle and struck a pavement, after which the car came to a standstill.
According to information, the suspects got out of the vehicle and again fired shots at the SAPS members, who then returned fire.
One suspect (36) was wounded in the back and taken to a local hospital.
The other three suspects fled the scene on foot, but were arrested by other members of the SAPS, who arrived to assist.
Three firearms with no serial numbers were seized and all the stolen goods were recovered, said Joubert.
The three suspects, aged 30, 37 and 42, will appear in the Brakpan Magistrates Court on charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, being in possession of suspected stolen property and being in possession of unlicensed firearms.
