Don’t become an easy target

With the festive season in full swing, Brakpan police have warned residents to exercise caution when withdrawing large amounts of cash from banks.

This follows several recent incidents where residents have been robbed of large sums of money, shortly after leaving the bank where the cash was withdrawn.

On Friday afternoon, last week, a man was robbed of R9 000 by an armed robber, after withdrawing the money at a local bank.

The man was returning to his vehicle at about 2.50pm, when the robber approached him, pointed a gun at him and demanded the cash.

He fled with the man’s money and two cellphones.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, offered the following tips:

n always be on the lookout for suspicious people or vehicles.

* Don’t visit the bank on the same day or at the same time.

* Have someone accompany you to the bank.

* Do not make unnecessary stops after you have withdrawn a large amount of money.

* Transfer large amounts via internet banking.

“If, however, it is really necessary for you to withdraw a large amount of cash, you can phone us and we will determine in which way we can assist you,” he said.

A police escort to the bank must be requested well in advance.
