Behaviour of road users is disgraceful

E L van den Berg writes by email: I refer to Sunday, February 9, when a horrific accident occurred on Springs Road at about 10am.

This caused both sides of the road to be closed for several hours.

As the South African Police Services attempted to cordon off the area in order for the necessary authorities (paramedics, EMPD, tow trucks, fire brigade, etc.) to attend to the injured, clear the road and re-route traffic, the police members were bombarded with rude, unsympathetic road-users, obstructing traffic, shouting obsceneties, hand signals flying high into the air as they sped off in anger because they were not allowed to enter the accident scene or given any information on the situation at hand.

Would you have liked it if someone gawked at your loved one lying injured or deceased? Taking photographs of the injured/dead and spreading them via social networks for all to see?

Shame on all of you!

Furthermore, is this how you recognise the law in our country?

Everyone is always so quick to complain that the law is not enforced, but, when it is being enforced, you greet it with absolute disregard and disrespect for those who are entitled and trained to do so.

I am disgraced by the behaviour of the road-users in our area.

Lastly, a big thank you to all the people involved in attempting to clear up the scene as quickly as possible.

It is good to know that there still are people who run to help you when you are in dire need of assistance in dangerous situations.

And to the family of the victim, we hold you in our thoughts.
