Mthokozisi’s assault accuser: The justice system has failed me

By Tinashe Venge

It has been a controversial few weeks for SA Idols runner up, Mthokozisi Ndaba, who was accused of assaulting a woman just days after the competition ended.

The saga began in late-November when a woman by the name of Neo Tsele accused the singer of punching her before shoving her against a wall. Tsele shared images of the alleged assault before promptly pressing charges against Ndaba — who fervently denied the accusations.

The charges against him were dropped by the NPA on the 4th of December and within hours, Neo was on social media expressing her disappointment at the verdict.

In several impassioned Instagram Stories posts, Mthokozisi’s accuser expressed her disappointment at the South African Police Services and our country’s justice system when dealing with matters of abuse.

One of her posts read: “We are told to speak out and call the police but that has never helped us, once we do that we are labeled as liars and attention seekers which gives these men who abuse us power to continue doing these brutal things to us.”

She continued to lament the fact that victims in South Africa are hardly ever taken seriously, and expressed her concern at how other women may suffer the same fate.

“I am crying out for every woman who has been in my situation. We will never get justice, it is so sad but that’s reality. They will continue killing us, sexually and physically abuse us because they’re giving them chances to do that over and over again.”

Although Mthokozisi’s charges have been withdrawn provisionally, several sources report that he could still be charged for the alleged assault. eNCA reports that the National Prosecuting Authority is still awaiting three witness statements before making a final decision on the case.
