By Sandisiwe Mbhele

The kind words of Mfundi Vundla, the creator and producer of Generations, for the late actor Menzi Ngubane has not sat well in the eyes of Twitter users.

After the sad news of Ngubane’s passing on 13 March, tributes have been pouring in from fellow actors and the fraternity as a whole.

The actor was well known for his role as Sibusiso Dlomo on Generations. Vundla said the loss was “devastating” for the country, TimesLIVE reported.

Among other things, Vundla said he was shocked and saddened by the news and that Ngubane was a brilliant actor. However, social media had not forgotten the time when 16 actors were fired on the soapie over a pay dispute in 2013.

The actors were demanding higher wages, longer contract and royalties. One of those actors was Ngubane. Vundla at that time called the strike “stupid” and that he was “blindsided”.

An old video of Ngubane explaining his situation of why he decided to join the strike, describing his working conditions at Generations, has gone viral.

Ngubane explains after he left the hospital on a Thursday that he received a call sheet the following day that he needs to be back on set on the next Monday.

“As weak as I was, spending seven weeks at the hospital, I said nothing. What was most important is that I pitch up at work, do my work and make money for them.”
