‘Idols’ hopefuls down to seven

Innocent Mabushe from Phalaborwa fell out of the running for the much-coveted title of South African Idol during this week's Live Results Show.

The 27-year-old sang Phil Collins’ hit ‘Two Hearts’ during Sunday night’s Movie Magic-themed episode, but his rendition of the song – from the soundtrack for 80s film ‘Buster – failed to impress viewers and he was given the disappointing news that he received the least votes on Tuesday night.

The judges also opted not to use their save, with the total number of contestants now down to just seven.

Commenting on his last performance, judge Gareth Cliff suggested that Innocent might have chosen the wrong song, while Unathi Msengana felt the contestant tackled an unusually non-commercial song “very maturely”. Randall Abrahams typically didn’t mince words and told the ‘Idols’ hopeful that vocalists are expected to lead and shouldn’t rely on a band to carry them.

With tension rising as the competition get stiffer, the remaining contestants set to battle it out in the next episode are Brenden Ledwaba from Graskop, Musa Sukwene from Witbank, Bunny Majaja from Florida Glen, Sonke Mazibuko from Soweto, Christina Williams from PE, Crystalene Nair from Newlands West, and Zoe Zana from Bishop Lavis.
