7 nods but no win

More than a win

Real name Ntokozo Mdluli, the rap artist hails from Mpumalanga and said winning the award in his home province means more.

“I got family in the crowd. My family is from the far east of the province. The fact that they drove all the way up here to witness the moment is quite encouraging for me.”

Themed Crowning Greatness, the Metro FM awards were held at Mpumalanga’s Mbombela stadium for the final year after being hosted in the province for three years.

The night’s winners

Some of the night’s biggest winners were Makhadzi, who walked away with the Artist of the Year award, and KZN singing and rap duo Blaq Diamond, who were named the Best Duo/Group.

Amapiano boy band Woodblock DJs won the Best Viral Challenge for Skuta Baba. Similar to K.O, this year’s Best Jazz Album winner Linda Sikhakhane won an award that he missed out on two years ago.

“First of all I wasn’t expecting to win, as I said we never prepare for these moments because I understand the stature of the category and the people that were part of [it]. To be given this opportunity is very humbling,” Sikhakhane told The Citizen on the night.

The category was one of the most competitive on the night, with artists such as Thandiswa Mazwai ( Sankofa), Nduduzo Makhathini (uNomkhubulwane), Nomfundo Xaluva (Ndilapha) and Sydney Mavundla (Dirge for our Fathers) were all nominated.
