Lekker TV launches (video)

Months after former 5FM DJ Gareth Cliff launched his online radio station - internet radio perceived to be the future - Jacaranda FM announced the launch of Lekker TV: nine hours of weekly television content and music entertainment.

Positioned as an additional platform for audiences to connect and interact with the brand, Jacaranda FM general manager Kevin Fine says, “Everyone speaks of this multi-channel approach, but online and radio is not multi-channel, it’s dual channel. Adding television as another platform gives us a national footprint to convert new listeners. But it’s not just about the platform, more importantly it’s about the content. By repurposing our on air material for television, the aim is to create thoughtful, intelligent and engaging content across platforms. Radio lives in its own eco-system. This way we’re creating our own unique eco-system.”

A collaboration between the local radio station, KykNET Musiek and Urban Brew Studios; shows will be hosted by popular Jacaranda FM presenters: Rian van Heerden, Janina Oberholzer, Frankie du Toit, Morne JK, Barney Simon and Martin Bester.

“It’s not just people sitting around a sound desk speaking into a microphone,” says Fine. “Each hour has its own flavour, modified with compelling visual and interactive content.”

Shows will include music charts, sports, song requests, gossip, entertainment and on-air highlights.

“We’re creating relevant content that people want. We want to engage with our audience and are always searching for new and interesting ways of doing so. Nowadays people have a choice in what they listen to. The aim is to provide content for a psychographic rather than a demographic.”

When asked about the name, Lekker TV, though predominantly an Afrikaans word, Fine defends the company’s decision, saying “Lekker has become a universal word. It has natural cross-over points in all cultures.”

Attempting to discredit classic stereotypes and former practices where radio is defined according to colour and race, the station’s aim is to build a sense of togetherness across all cultures.

“Although according to our mandate we have to speak English and Afrikaans, we can still tell people’s stories. We can find a common space,” says Fine.

He concludes, “That’s me being optimistic.”

The station also built a production unit and edit suite on site. With a full-fledged film crew invading their space, capturing the behind the scenes footage, Lekker TV is radio-television in the true sense of the phrase. Packed with music videos, witty interviews, songs, games and even field reports, the show is only a month old and already showing signs of a feasible future.
