MP karate team performs at nationals championships

See how these young athletes battled their way to the podium at the National Championships

The Mpumalanga karate team showcased its skill and determination at the National Karate Championships held at the Tongaat Sports Centre in Durban from March 7 to 9.

Competing in the junior, cadet and children’s divisions, the team delivered impressive performances against some of the best young athletes in South Africa.

Chibuzo Okpugo showed his potential by pushing through a tough opening round against the eventual gold medallist.

In the repêchage round, he faced a fierce contest that ended in a draw.

After an in-depth review of techniques, the judges awarded Chibuzo the bronze medal in individual kumite.

He also passed his Provincial Judge B Kumite exam, which adds to the Kata Judge B certificate he secured in Secunda a month ago.
