Riders set for historic USA barrel racing showdown
From Mpumalanga to America, SA’s barrel racers are ready to make history this July in the USA.
In a first for South African equestrian sport, a local barrel racing team is set to saddle up on American soil this July, proudly flying the Mzansi flag in a groundbreaking international showdown.
Barrel Racing South Africa (BRSA), headquartered at Farm Eikehof in Ermelo, is heading to the United States to compete in the much-anticipated South Africa vs USA Barrel Race – a historic tour poised to catapult South African talent into the global rodeo spotlight.
Founded in the heart of Mpumalanga, BRSA has steadily transformed barrel racing – traditionally amea niche Western riding sport – into a dynamic and proudly South African movement. Known for its grit, sportsmanship and community spirit, the organisation has nurtured a generation of riders who combine speed with style, and determination with discipline.
Now, BRSA’s finest riders are preparing for an adrenaline-charged tour of the American Midwest. Team member Melissa le Roux told Highvelder that the squad is focused and ready to represent South Africa with pride.

“We’ll be taking part in a few build-up events in preparation for the big day,” she said.
The headline showdown between South Africa and the USA will take place on 23 July at Webb Ranches in South Dakota, where the riders will go stirrup to stirrup with some of America’s best.
