Melo Ngwenya shines in rugby and hockey provincial tours
Grade 7 learner Melo Ngwenya competes in two provincial sports tours during school break, showing skill and focus.
The recent school holidays were anything but relaxing for Laerskool JJ van der Merwe’s Grade Seven learner, Melo Ngwenya, who represented Mpumalanga in not one, but two demanding provincial sport tours.
Melo showcased his talent and dedication, making his mark in both rugby and hockey.
His whirlwind journey began on June 27, when he kicked off his tours in East London with the U13 Craven Week rugby team, a tour that concluded on July 5.
Straight from the rugby field, he headed directly to Potchefstroom for the hockey tour, which ran until July 9.
The selection process for the Craven Week rugby team, held in Mbombela in May this year, was a nerve-wracking experience for Melo.
He admitted to ‘shaking and being stressed’ about making the team, but immense relief washed over him when his name was called.
Playing at wing number 14, Melo’s greatest strengths are his speed and his ability to ‘read a game’ effectively.
