WBHS defends unbeaten streak

A draw against St Charles takes WBHS to 16 unbeaten games.

WESTVILLE Boys’ High School’s 1st soccer team maintian their unbeaten run of 15 games after drawing their match against St Charles on Saturday.

The team was confident it would be more than a match for St Charles on Saturday after winning the Kloof Inter-provincial Tournament the previous Saturday and beating Clifton during the week, .

According to Steve Bezuidenhout, the school’s 1st team soccer coach, the Highway team was blessed with some talented players but has already lost six of them through injury, including its three top strikers as well as captain, Jason Oakes. Kingsley Jollands, the team’s star defender has also been added to the injury list.

“Possibly too many games in too compacted a season are beginning to make their toll, ” said Bezuidenhout.

WBHS got off to a positive start and dominated the first half but failed to get any reward for its effort.

“The second half was much of the same with the St Charles goalie having a torrid time but managing to keep a clean slate and WBHS more intent on breaking the cross bar rather than kicking the ball into the back of the net. Facing a continuous onslaught, St Charles seemed content to hold out for draw,” added Bezuidenhout.

He said it was a frustrating result but was sure his counterpart from Pietermaritzburg would have been quite content with the draw.
