Fabulous reads – SA-based crime thriller packs a punch
Book review - Knuckle Bone by NR Brodie.

Knuckle Bone, NR Brodie, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781770105850
LOCAL is lekker. This is the best way I can sum up NR Brodie’s Knuckle Bone into one thought. Get ready for a brilliantly written South African crime thriller.
Set in the city of Johannesburg, we follow the protagonist Ian Jack, a former policeman-now-turned-academic. He is pulled back into the world of crime-fighting during what appears to be a routine housebreaking gone wrong, all while conducting research for his master’s thesis.
Teaming up with a former colleague, Lieutenant Reshma Patel, the two quickly find themselves in unknown territories, rubbing shoulders with sangomas and witches as they uncover something sinister.

The intrigue and suspense starts in the very first chapter and does not relent until the very last word. It’s an impossible book to put down.
The main characters are all loveable, relatable and beautifully developed throughout the story. I actually found myself praying for the author to spare them as I kept turning the pages.
Reading a crime thriller set against the richly cultured South African city was such a treat.
