Mike Picker is an associate professor at the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town. His research on the insects in arid regions has resulted in 130 publications and four guide books. He has a very broad knowledge of the natural history and ecology of the rich South African insect fauna.

Charles Griffiths is an emeritus professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cape Town. He has authored more than 200 scientific papers, five other guide books to various components of the South African fauna, and has discovered more than 100 species. He is also a well-known wildlife photographer.

Alan Weaving (1938–2018) was an entomologist who lived in Grahamstown. He had a particular interest in wasps and published two books on the insect diversity of southern

Africa, including Southern African Insects and their World.
