Tall order: Name this giraffe and win

Pick the perfect name for the baby giraffe at PheZulu Safari Park and you could win a game drive for four.

PHEZULU Safari Park recently welcomed a new addition to its family, a male giraffe, and need your help to name it! One lucky reader, whose selected name is chosen for the young giraffe, will win a game drive for four at the park.

“We are inviting you to help us to choose the perfect name for our little boy giraffe,” said the owner of PheZulu Safari Park, Leo Kroone. “He’s a Durban giraffe, so perhaps needs a Durban name. His Mum is Nicolette, well, Neckolette, actually, and his dad is Dancer. He is sweet, shy, is still a bit un-elegant when he tries to stand after a nap and he has long long eye lashes!”

The baby giraffe is one of the tower of giraffes resident in PheZulu.

“Tower is the collective noun for giraffes. It can sometimes also be kaleidoscope, journey or herd of giraffe. In fact, the name giraffe is derived from Arabic word Zarafah, which means ‘he who walks swiftly’,” said Kroone.

When the private game reserve started in 2005, there were two giraffes, Neck and Neckolette. Their offspring are all happily settled into the park and, every now and again, they introduce new giraffe into the tower. Dancer is new to the park and this is his first child.

Apart from the giraffe, there are families of kudu, wildebees, blesbok, zebra, impala, bush pig, warthog and jackal.

“We would love for you to come and see our little chap for yourself and see what name suits him. There are game drives offered throughout the day, six days a week,” said Kroone.

To stand a chance to win, readers must type in their suggested name for the giraffe, why it was chosen (if there is a story to the name) as well as their own full name, surname and contact details in the competition form below. The deadline for entries is on Friday, 19 March at noon. The official name choosing jury, made up of PheZulu staff, will select a name and contact the winner. The winner will be contacted on Wednesday, 24 March. The voucher for the Safari Game Drive can be redeemed within the next three months. Terms and conditions apply. The judge’s decision is final. The prize is not transferable for cash.
