African Gladiator can slay them

Jockey Marco van Rensburg has a big decision to make with the free-striding African Gladiator in today’s Race 5 at Flamingo Park, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1800m.

Should he go to the front, even though there are others who can make the early running, including the well-fancied Captain Siderius?

This track tends to suit strong front-runners and it has certainly brought about a revival in fortune for the Cliffie Miller-trained African Gladiator. He is a winner of five of his 11 starts at the course, with four of them coming over this distance, including an 8.25-length demolition of Dolomite in his latest.

The Modern Day gelding is 1.50kg worse off for finishing just a short-head ahead of Eye Of The World when the two met here in September. But, with African Gladiator in good heart and hopefully getting the run of the race, he could confirm that form.

Captain Siderius and Vengeance from the bang-in-form Dorrie Sham yard both have winning chances.

Stable jockey Gunter Wrogemann has opted for Captain Siderius and the hint should be taken. This four-year-old has won three of his four starts at this venue, so must be respected, even though he would carry 4.50kg less if it was a handicap.

Vengeance was given a soft introduction to this course last time when a well beaten third, but is sure to come on from that.

Eye Of The World is one of four Jaap Visser-trained runners. The well-tried seven-year-old is at his very best over this track and trip and is sure to be doing his best work late.
