7 DIY face masks to solve your skin problems

Try these seven DIY face masks to solve pretty much all your skin problems.

Using ordinary ingredients you have at home as a DIY face mask can work wonders for your skin.

Sometimes we’re too lazy to get to the shops, or (let’s be honest) too broke to splurge on facial masks. So, when you want to give your skin some TLC, but don’t want to wander further than your kitchen, try these seven DIY face masks to solve pretty much all your skin problems.

1. Banana and honey face mask

Who needs botox when you have bananas? A banana face mask will help moisturise your skin and leave it feeling and looking softer. Honey has natural antibacterial properties, helping to soothe any imperfections.

  • Combine one medium-sized ripe banana with ¼ cup of plain yoghurt
  • Add 2 tsp of honey
  • Apply to your face and neck and let it set for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse it off

2. Cocoa dream hydrating face mask

Did you know? Cocoa is a great antioxidant that helps to refine pores! Adding avocado makes this mask recipe intensely hydrating.

  • Mash ¼ of an avocado and add 1 tbsp cocoa powder
  • Add 1 tbsp of honey and apply to your face for 10 minutes
  • Remove with warm water, then tone and moisturise your face once dry

3. Turmeric and yoghurt face mask

Turmeric is an amazing spice that has plenty of benefits for your skin. It has been used as a natural remedy for acne, eczema, dry skin, wrinkles and dark circles under the eyes.

It also reduces skin inflammation because it’s so high in antioxidants and slows cell damage. It can also help reduce pigmentation and even out skin tone. No wonder it’s one of our favourite DIY face masks.

  • Blend 1 tsp ground turmeric with 1 tbsp plain yoghurt
  • Add 1 tsp honey and 2 tsp lemon juice
  • Stir until you get a thickish paste and apply it to your face
  • Let it sit for 15 to 25 minutes or until it is completely dry, then rinse off

4. Oatmeal face mask for redness and sensitive skin

Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness and bumps on your nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead. Cold weather can aggravate rosacea.

An oatmeal face mask can lessen this irritation, with the help of apple cider vinegar to help stabilise the pH of your skin.

  • Blend 1,5 tbsp ground oats (or oat flour) with 2 tbsp plain yoghurt
  • Add 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar and 1 tsp honey and mix well
  • Add 3 tbsp hot strong-brewed green tea and stir
  • Apply to your face and let it set for 10 to 15 minutes
  • Repeat twice a week for best results

5. Morning matcha face mask

This energising mask is the perfect way to wake up the skin and makes it glow. If you can’t find chlorella (a type of algae that’s high in antioxidants, beta-carotene and zinc), stick to the matcha powder.

  • Combine 1 tsp matcha powder and 1 tsp chlorella in a small bowl
  • Add just enough water or aloe water to create a paste
  • Apply a thin layer to your face and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes

6. Brightening strawberry lemon face mask

Think of this DIY face mask as a smoothie for your face: strawberries contain salicylic acid (which is great for acne-prone skin), while lemon juice helps to tighten pores and remove old, dead skin cells.

Yoghurt and honey have antibiotic properties, and this whole blend is as good for your outsides as it is in a drink.

  • Mash ¼ cup strawberries and add 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • Add 1 tbsp honey and 1 tbsp yoghurt and mix well
  • Apply to your face and neck for 10 minutes.
  • Wipe off with a face cloth and rinse with cool water

7. Papaya and honey pigmentation mask

Papaya is rich in antioxidants, and its enzymes help to remove dead skin cells for a glowing, healthy complexion. This DIY face mask is great for those who have hyper-pigmentation, uneven skin tone and sun spots.

  • Mash ½ a small, ripe peeled and seeded papaya and add ½ tsp honey
  • Add ¼ tsp lemon or lime juice and mix well
  • Apply evenly to your face for 15 to 20 minutes
  • Rinse off with lukewarm water
