Lock, stock and wine barrel: Bourbon whisky

Try this fantastic orange cocktail recipe featuring American bourbon for Halloween.

It seems Halloween has truly become a celebration in South Africa. At the weekend my timelines were filled with friends, acquaintances and people taking part in a zombie walk, getting dressed up in some gruesome garb or simply dressing up as a fictional (or real) character.

But seeing as today is actually Halloween, why not celebrate with the perfect drink that captures the spirit of the American holiday. With Whisky and Spirits Live just around the corner, it was easy to get a fantastic (orange) cocktail recipe that’s not at all scary, and quite simple to prepare.

And it features American bourbon, a great way to honour the country that leads the world when it comes to Halloween.

Buffalo trace bourbon old fashioned

Ingredients

4 dashes of Angostura Bitters
1 sugar cube or tsp of sugar
Dash of water
1 orange wheel
50ml Buffalo Trace bourbon whisky

Method

1. Place the sugar cube in old fashioned glass and saturate it with bitters.

2. Add a dash of plain water and muddle until it is dissolved.

3. Fill the glass with ice cubes and add whisky. Garnish with an orange slice.

This year Whisky and Spirits Live is bigger than ever, and if this cocktail got you in the mood, there will be many other bourbons on offer. Whisky and Spirits Live opens its doors from November 8 to 10 at the Sandton Convention Centre.
