Bespoke burgers

Add Jewish dietary restrictions to a generally fussy eater, and you get every chef's worst nightmare.

Unfortunately this nightmare patron happens to be me. If I’m not removing the bacon or losing the calamari, my general hatred of olives is causing chaos. So any restaurant that offers a “make your own” option is a safe bet for me.

When I sat down at the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch hotel for one of its fabled burger and milkshake combos, my eyes lit up as I opened the menu and saw the words “build your burger”.

The restaurant offers a choice of beef, lamb, chicken or fish for the patty, each available in different sizes for differing appetites.

You are then given a choice of sauces – each going with a patty suggestion so if you’re clueless about flavour combos, you won’t be at a loss.

You also get to select the side dish from the usual suspects. I decided on a 250g beef patty with teriyaki sauce – an odd selection but one that didn’t disappoint. The side of skinny fries was just the right size to fill the gap.

If you’re looking for a sinfully decadent milkshake, then this is also the place for you. You can have an alcoholic option or one that’s simply delicious. The milkshakes incorporate everything from

Ferrero Roche to honeycomb or Oreos. Definitely worth ignoring your diet for one of these!

The Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! Melrose Arch is known for being a “party hotel”, so after dinner you can stay and enjoy live entertainment or simply take in the vibe.

We visited on a Saturday night and the crowd gathered there partied well into the night.
