The search is on for SA’s new boerewors champion

By Citizen Reporter

The Shoprite and Checkers annual Championship Boerewors competition is back and clever cooks are invited to develop a new flavour of wors to be sold nationwide.

For the past 26 years, these two supermarket chains have embarked on a nationwide search for South Africa’s best boerewors, creating a legacy of quality, taste and trust.

Over the years the Championship Boerewors title has been held by South Africans from all walks of life: housewives to butchery managers and even by a then 13-year-old primary school pupil.

The Championship Boerewors competition started as an internal competition (between 1993 and 2000 only Shoprite or Checkers employees could enter). But the country’s best boerewors recipe can only be found if all South Africans are allowed to participate so, since 2001, the competition has been open to the public.

The recipes have to be for traditional boerewors, which must contain at least 90% meat comprising beef, as well as lamb or pork, or a mixture of lamb and pork, and the fat content of the meat mixture may not exceed 30%.

The distinctive combinations of spices like coriander, cloves, nutmeg and black pepper, as well as fluids like vinegar, water and Worcestershire sauce are what differentiate boerewors from other variants.

Recipes may not contain: bacon, chutney, cheese, peri-peri, curry, tomato sauce, peppadews, green pepper, Parmesan cheese, Aromat, chilli or venison.

The 2019 Championship Boerewors winner will walk away with a Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD-6 4×4 6AT worth over R500 000.
