Boys club dismantled as women get top 947 shows

Radio station 947 has received praise for placing women in slots previously occupied by men.

Radio 947 loves you and further cemented the love yesterday by appointing a woman, Thando Thabooty, to the much-coveted afternoon drive show, replacing DJ Fresh, after broadcasting company Primedia relieved him of his duties, along with Euphonik, following allegations of sexual assault against them.

Social media was overflowing with praise for the station for prioritising women empowerment and “dismantling patriarchy” in the world of radio.  Radio for a long time has been a boys club, so when such a milestone is reached, celebrations are in order.

As things stand, Anele Mdoda occupies the breakfast show, Andy Maqondwana is on the mid-morning slot, Ayanda MVP on lunch time and now Thando Thabethe on drive time.

As the latest addition to the family of powerful women, Thando says: “I’m really excited to be returning to radio. I have always loved radio as a medium to connect with people through music and conversation.”

People are saying this couldn’t have come at a better time considering that yesterday the world commemorated International Women’s Day. Equally interesting is that the station is headed by a woman, Thando Makhunga.

No one is more deserving of this slot than Thando, according to the station manager.

“Thando has over a decade of experience in the entertainment and has proven to be a successful and successful presenter during her time on various stations. She is a young, dynamic and multitalented woman whose drive and ambition is an example to all aspirational South African with the courage to reach and work for their dreams,” 947 station manager Thando said.

It’s not every day that woman speak so fondly and proudly of each other but the spirit of sisterhood is evidently present at the station, with Anele sharing a heartfelt welcome to Thando. So did Mantsoe, even though she is leaving the station.

We reached out to the station manager to comment about this milestone but at the time of publishing, she hadn’t reverted back.
