Matsulu girl (16) drowns in Crocodile River’s currents

The incident occurred under the N4 bridge in Matsulu on December 14.

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit will be braving the Crocodile River tomorrow, December 15, to recover the body of a 16-year-old victim of drowning.

According to the unit, the girl, Nokulunga Mbokane, and a friend had been playing and swimming near the banks of the Crocodile River at about 14:00 when the river current swept the two girls downstream.

The friend reportedly managed to reach the safety of the riverbanks under the N4 bridge in Matsulu, however, Nogulunga was swept further away.

The friend immediately climbed up the banks and alerted some community members to the tragedy. The police were called and the diving unit was sent out.

The unit said the recovery will be a particularly difficult one as the flooded Crocodile River’s currents are strong, following the recent heavy rain.

The team will also have to brave crocodiles and hippos during the rescue.
