Hoërskool Nelspruit enjoys great success on busy sports weekend

Hoërskool Nelspruit had a great weekend of winter sport on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, with all of the rugby, netball and girls' hockey teams in action, winning 23 out of a possible 27 games.

Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18, were two jam-packed days of action for sports enthusiasts at Hoërskool Nelspruit whose rugby, netball and girls’ hockey teams put on a grand show, with only four losses across all sport codes.

Each of the three sports’ teams were in action at home and participating in their respective leagues, all playing against a different school. The netball teams played against HTS Ermelo, the girls’ hockey took on HTS Middelburg and the rugby faced off with Hoërskool Rustenburg.

The netball was first in line for the weekend, with Ermelo visiting NHS on Friday for their fixtures. NHS won all eight of the matches. The first team won 40-29. The biggest win of the day came from the U14B team, though, who won 39-2.

The hockey and rugby teams all played on Saturday morning. NHS won six of their seven hockey matches. The first team won 2-1. The U14B side again had the biggest margin of victory, winning 6-1.

On the rugby field, the hosts dominated the proceedings once more. Nine out of 12 NHS teams were victorious, and the biggest triumph came from the U16C team, which won 62-0.

The first team lost 22-19, though, continuing their very difficult start to the 2024 SDC Noordvaal Cup. The loss against Rustenburg marked their third defeat in three games, and would have been a bitter pill to swallow, considering they were ahead at half-time.

NHS also dominated the second half in terms of territory and possession, but simply could not make their chances count. Turning down a penalty with nine minutes to go in an attempt to go for a try came back to haunt them. Rustenburg’s defence held firm, keeping NHS at bay for the entirety of the last 10 minutes, staving off onslaught after onslaught to win by three points.

Next up, NHS takes on Hoërskool Ben Vorster (netball), Hoërskool Middelburg (boys’ and girls’ hockey) and Hoërskool Marais Viljoen (rugby), all on Saturday May 25.
