Vehicle recovered from quarry under investigation

A vehicle discovered at the bottom of a quarry over the weekend, was confirmed previously stolen and is under investigation.

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit recovered the car out of a deep body of water at a quarry along the Sabie/White River road on Saturday December 11.

The Blue Waves Scuba team, based in Mbombela, had reportedly been doing diving exercises at the quarry last week when they made the surprise discovery of the sunken vehicle.

They immediately contacted the police diving unit, which headed out with Van Wettens Breakdowns to retrieve the car. It is unclear how long the car had been in the water or to whom it belongs.

The police diving unit and Van Wettens spent Saturday morning locating the car underwater, before hitching it to one of the tow trucks, which managed to hoist it from the water onto the quarry banks.

The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit’s Capt Pottie Potgieter said the car had been confirmed as a stolen vehicle and is under investigation.

“We also want to thank Van Wettens, who assisted us free of charge. The vehicle recovery would not have been possible without their help and for that, the team is very grateful,” said Potgieter.

Due to the ongoing investigation, some information has been withheld as per the request of the various law enforcement agencies involved.
