Absa Lowveld Air Show back with a bang

This year's Absa Lowveld Air Show was attended and enjoyed by over 9 000 Lowvelders.

Over 9 000 Lowvelders were captivated and in awe following a thrilling display at this year’s Absa Lowveld Air Show at the old Nelspruit Airport on Saturday May 13.

With the flight displays starting later in the afternoon, there were scores of other entertainment to grab the attention of all the attendees throughout the day, including bouncy castles for the kids, helicopter flip rides, various exhibitions, food trucks, beverage stands and stallholders selling an array of toys and locally crafted goods.

Several aircraft were also on display around the showgrounds for people young and old to marvel over and take photos with.

Despite the unfavourable weather conditions on the day of the show, the flight and fireworks display was still, of course, the main highlight.

A statement by the Absa Lowveld Air Show’s Johan Heine said although the weather created some setbacks, the air show turned out to be a resounding triumph, and the reaction from the crowd was overwhelmingly positive.

“On Saturday, adverse weather conditions in Mbombela and the escarpment presented obstacles for the timely arrival of aircraft at the air show. However, thanks to the exceptional efforts of the flight display director, flight safety display officer and the pilots, necessary adjustments and changes were made to ensure that it proceeded smoothly,” said Heine.

“Their expertise and quick thinking contributed significantly to the success of the event.”

The statement added that the crowd’s reaction to the breathtaking fireworks exhibition was nothing short of amazing, and they relished every moment of the 12-minute spectacle, which showcased international standards of excellence.

“Unfortunately, due to the ever-changing weather conditions on Saturday and Sunday, some acts on the programme had to be replaced or rearranged at the last minute. The primary concern was the safe return of the aircraft as well as their operational limitations, and prompt decisions were taken to address these challenges effectively,” Heine said.

“It was crucial to ensure that the show went on and that the spectators received full value for their money.”
