Deafening silent protest against violence

A silent march aimed at addressing domestic violence, the brutal killing of women and children, kidnapping, rape and abuse was held this past weekend.
On Saturday, scores of marchers walked from Kellysville (Fourways) to Mashishing Recreational Centre.
Hamilton Matlala, one of the organisers said, “The march was a great success and the protesters achieved what they had hoped to do; send out a message about the abuse of women and children”.
“As a growing community organisation, we want to solve problems in society regarding issues related to abuse, rape, kidnapping and murder before going to the police station.

We are planning to have a walk-in centre where we will work hand in hand with the SAPS to tend to the victims, instead of the victims going to the station. We require a workplace structure to do our administration work and other services to take place.”

“At the moment we were focusing on decreasing the number of cases we saw in the past three weeks.
We are planning to host another march with a different agenda based on what is happening in our community. We are still going to discuss it with the team and finalise everything,” he explained.

Matlala added that they appreciated the support they received from the community and the fact that marchers adhered to the lockdown regulations regarding social distancing.
“We manage to follow all instructions in terms of social distancing during the walk from Kellysville to the recreational centre. On arrival at the entrance of the centre, everyone was sanitised and each one of the participants signed a register,” he said.
The local SAPS, traffic department members and emergency service teams supported the initiative.
