Hospital site visit by DA

Several complaints from community members led to an investigation by the DA and a visit to Lydenburg General Hospital.

During a sight inspection on Tuesday January 19, the DA brought various issues to the attention of the hospital’s management. The visit was led by the provincial DA leader and health spokesperson, Jane Sithole. She was joined by Sonja Boshoff, a member of the National Council of Provinces in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature.
Several issues were discussed with the hospital board. Failure to provide medication, not being able to register deceased family members, loss of patient files and rude doctors attending to patients were some of the complaints.

This included one rape victim turned away from the hospital without having been examined by a doctor.
In its defence, the hospital management highlighted that there is no shortage of medication, but rather that nursing staff could be reluctant to unpack medication provided by the Department of Health.
The management further committed itself to investigating the other issues.
Lydenburg General Hospital is one of Mpumalanga’s oldest hospitals, opened on November 1, 1927, and provides medical services to a large population of about 101 000 people from as far as Tubatse, Sekhukune and eMakhazeni local municipalities.
“We commend all frontline workers for the hard work they have been doing this far. We also urge them to be consistent in the services they provide to the people. Residents should not be deprived of health services,” said Sithole.
