Renowned Lowveld artists go on Strauss & Co auctions
The Johannesburg Auction Week at Strauss & Co takes place from November 3 to 9.
Responding to collectors’ interest in smaller, thematic sales, Strauss & Co will host four curated art sales, all scheduled to take place in the evening, as well as a sale of fine wine.
Works by Keith Alexander, Judith Mason and Gordon Vorster, who are among the most prominent artists to be linked to the Lowveld and had studios in the area during their lifetimes, will be on offer.
Johannesburg Auction Week kicks off on Thursday November 3, with a 100-lot consolidated sale of modern, post-war and contemporary art. Notable painters include Gregoire Boonzaier, Adolph Jentsch, Walter Meyer, John Mohl, Ndikhumbule Ngqinambi, Frans Oerder and Larry Scully. The lot arrangement includes artist focuses on Walter Battiss, Sydney Goldblatt and François Krige.

On Sunday November 6, Strauss & Co is proud to present the sale of the the Coats Family Cellar, arguably the most prestigious fine wine collection ever offered in South Africa, which contains a rich selection of the world’s finest, most sought-after wines, spanning over 150 years.
Following on from the wine sale is an auction dedicated to South African sculpture: IN/FORM: Exploring South African Sculpture (Monday November 7), which includes seven woodcarvings by Job Kekana. The selection of figurative pieces reflects Kekana’s secular and religious interests as an artist. Other notable sculptors include Frances Goodman, Sydney Kumalo, Ezrom Legae, Dylan Lewis, Henry Moore, Walter Oltmann, Edoardo Villa and Anton van Wouw.

Three large-scale site-specific commissions by Walter Battiss, Irma Stern and Andrew Verster form part of a vibrant medley of high-value works being offered on Tuesday November 8. The sale also includes important work by South African masters JH Pierneef, Irma Stern and Alexis Preller, as well as works by highly regarded international artists Yinka Shonibare and Marina Abromovich.
Johannesburg Auction Week concludes with the Three Robs: Artist, Collaborator, Friend (Wednesday November 9), a single-artist sale of oils, watercolours, monotypes, pastels and drawings by Robert Hodgins.
