Grade Nine Bergvlam learner Christlene Spies (15), known as ‘Chris’ to her family and friends, has qualified for Mpumalanga Dance Colours and will compete in the Dance Talent and Model Association Nationals at Carnival City from September 17 to 27.

She qualified with gold in both the lyrical solo dance and musical theatre solo dance genres. Chris has been dancing with Glynnis Modern Dance Studio since the age of nine, and although she was not blessed with natural dance talent, her passion and dedication keep taking her to new heights.

Dancing builds strength for school return

She was homeschooled for seven years until last year due to emotional health challenges.

“Chris expressed her desire to return to mainstream schooling in August last year, feeling that her dance journey has made her emotionally and mentally strong enough to face mainstream challenges,” said her mother, Milly.

Chris has been dancing competitively for four years. She decided to compete to challenge herself and grow.

“It has paid off,” said Milly, “as Chris has become a better dancer technically on and off stage, and the stage has made her confidence and faith in herself soar.”

Chris takes ballet in her private time to ensure continued growth technically, as she does not have the extra hours anymore to attend ballet classes since returning to mainstream schooling.

“Chris works very hard and is extremely dedicated – a character trait she had learnt through dancing,” said Milly.

Chris excels in academics and drama

She achieved six distinctions last term, of which her highest were EMS and Afrikaans, subjects she never took while homeschooled.

On the cultural scene, Chris also participated in the Eisteddfod drama section, where she received Prestige A++ for dramatised Afrikaans poetry and Gold A+ for undramatised English poetry without taking official drama classes.

“I hope to inspire others to never give up on their dreams and to believe in themselves, even when nobody else does,” said Chris.
