Chickens come home to roost at White River Gallery
Proceeds from a unique auction of beautifully decorated chickens made from recycled egg boxes will go to GRIP. These delightful chickens are on exhibition at the White River Gallery at Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre until 21 June. Silent bids can be made at the gallery or you can bid online by visiting the Facebook page, The Chicken Challenge.
The White River Gallery has showcased awesome talent in its day but you could have knocked everybody over with a feather this past Saturday at the opening of The Chicken Challenge exhibition, in aid of GRIP.
Row upon row of beautifully decorated chickens sat perched regally on their show boxes. The original chickens were made in community projects from recycled egg boxes, and then transformed into artistic masterpieces with the most ingenious themes by local artists and other talented enthusiasts.
If you can’t get to the White River Gallery at the Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre to see for yourself, visit the Chicken Challenge page on Facebook. Have a giggle at Julius Malema, the Battery Chicken, Chicken a la King and the When-We chicken. Shine a torch at the feathered end of a golden chicken and take a peek into Nelson Mandela’s prison cell. Read the story behind the White Chicken; a symbolic interpretation of the brave women who daily fight and survive domestic violence.
The Chicken Run exhibition is in aid of GRIP, a non-profit organisation run by local women to provide assistance and counselling for survivors of sexual offences, domestic violence and HIV. Each chicken will be auctioned off by silent and online bids. Proceeds from this unique auction will go to GRIP.
The exhibition is open until 21 June. Bidding will take place for the duration of the exhibition. Final auction and handover will be held at the gallery on Saturday 21 June at midday.
