ENGINES REVVING FOR THE COMMUNITY

To the delight of everyone who had gathered at Dasha School and Centre for Disabled Children this past Saturday, members of the BMW Motorcycle Club Lowveld arrived, as they say, “high and tight”. Now, before you get the wrong end of the stick, in motorcycle terms this means riding as group (riding close to one other). It prevents cars and trucks from breaking into the group as they travel; something that is dangerous for motorcycle riders.

The children squealed with excitement when the huge motorcycles arrived. After they received their gift, they took turns to sit on a bike and rev its engine. Gert van der Merwe, chairman of the club, looked visibly moved as it became obvious that this small act of kindness on the part of its club members had translated to sheer joy and happiness on the faces of the children.

Joyce Pretorius, club secretary, did the lion’s share of organising the stationary drop-off. As it was Women’s Day, she paid tribute to the mothers of the children and women at Dasha School who do so much for the children to ensure “they can be the best they can be”.

Marié Matthews, secretary of the school, was thrilled with the donation of stationary. Pretorius had asked the school principle, Shirley Parsons, what was on their wish list and stationary is the one thing they say is always in short supply.

This is one of many events the club is rolling out as it lives by its vision; to value and treasure family, and support the Lowveld community where assistance is needed. While these children may never experience the thrill of riding a beautiful bike on the open road, for a short time they heard the engines roar.
