Night of 1000 stars a French Affair to remember
For the love of life! It was a bash and a half, right?
MBOMBELA – On Friday the annual Night of a 1000 Stars evening was themed “A French Affair”. A decorative Eiffel Tower, fairy-light stars, a street-cafe culture and top-notch cuisine left guests in a state of wonder.
Those who formed part of this memorable evening would agree that Madonna’s hit “On this Night of a Thousand Stars” from Evita best described the event:
“On this night of a thousand stars, let me take you to heaven’s door, where the music of love’s guitars plays for evermore”.
Background music and detailed table decorations contributed to creating a relaxing atmosphere straight out of France. Guests, dressed to the theme, were treated to a performance by Ooh La La, a French band. Fire dancers mesmerised the crowd with their impressive skills.
Another routine which guests delighted in was the cancan dancers of the Elana Burger Dance School, whose synchronised version of this infamous dance oozed stage personality.
Local singer, Natascha C performed a sexy version of “Happy Birthday to You” in honour of Sonpark Boulevard’s 20th birthday.
A cake was carried to the stage by members of the Pumas rugby team and to everyone’s surprise local model, Maryann Akoojee jumped out, guaranteeing that nobody would ever forget this year’s celebration.
Next guests were honoured for best portraying French flair. The best-dressed couple was Christo and Ogies Visscher. Christo escorted Ogies to the stage like a true gentleman, captivating hundreds of hearts.
Jan and Adri Muller were chosen as the second best-dressed pair.
Reinette Kerswill was the runner-up in the individual category and the winner was Allet Kinnear.
The sudden downpour could not deter guests and some covered their heads with tablecloths, others used black bags and a creative couple employed a bra and mannequin’s top half to keep dry.
“Come what may, I’ll finish my glass of wine in France!” a woman remarked.
After a while it became clear that the rain was not letting up.
The party continued at the various participating restaurants, with members of Ooh La La carrying their instruments up the stairs to continue entertaining the crowd. The show – and the fun – must go on.
According to Sandra Jacobs, Sonpark’s marketing executive, the amount collected for CANSA had not yet been determined. “The rain led to a postponement of Friday’s auction, which will still earn funds for the cause. We will also have a raffle and hope to exceed the R100 000 mark in aid of CANSA,” Jacobs said.
