Another Bagdad farmers’ market one for the books
Fresh food, cool crafts and nice people, what more could a Lowvelder ask for?
WHITE RIVER – In six months the Bagdad Farmers’ Market has grown threefold, without compromising on the quality goods it hosts without fail.
When Rowena Tyson and Sue Butowsky hosted another one this Saturday, it was clear that exhibitors’ standards have increased. Although the number of exhibitors has grown from 25 to 75 since June, the goods they put on display remain top-notch. The market focuses mainly on food. “And by food, we mean real, proper food. No mass produce. Only fresh, delicious, home-made goods,” Tyson said in a previous interview with Lowvelder.
The market also provides local crafters with a platform to sell their beautiful handmade goods. When the exhibitors, bakers and farmers stack their displays next to one another on the second Saturday of every month, it becomes a feast for the senses.
Bunches of freshly cut flowers especially drew the eye and the taste of biltong, cheese and craft beer made for a festival of taste. The market accommodates a charity organisation every month, offering it a stall to exhibit products and earn profit. This month it was the Care Buddies. Jenette Elrix and Yvonne McHeath were there with beautiful hand-stitched mittens, teapot covers and many other arty creations. They applauded Tyson and Butowsky on the endeavour.
The Bagdad Farmers’ Market has really become a place for friends to meet. The friendly people of White River and surrounds draw newcomers in for a chat over some cherry beer. This makes it almost impossible not to leave the place with some new friends and bags full of wonderful goods.
Although the market officially lasts until 12:00, patrons stuck around for at least two more hours as they just didn’t want the day to end.
What a wonderful thought to know that we can do it all again in an month.
