MBOMBELA – Who needs Prozac when you can have a bit of Barry Hilton? South Africa’s funniest cousin drew a large crowd to Emnotweni Arena in Mbombela on Friday.
His stand-up comedy show tickled hundreds of funny bones and had the crowd in stitches throughout the performance.
Hilton makes fun of our frustrations. He tackled issues like inequality, racial prejudice and even load-shedding in a hilarious way. At the end of the evening, everyone agreed that, with a good dose of laughter, any issue can be dealt with.
As a father of six who has been married three times, he’s seen all sides of life. When discussing relationship and family issues, Hilton identifies the things that irk most and finds a way to make everyone laugh about it. Load-shedding also featured on Friday. “Eskom is probably the only company whose advertisements beg you not to use its product,” he said. “I just don’t understand why it asks you not to use electricity in an ad on television. You need electricity to watch television, right?” he asked.
The “Nou gaan ons braai!” craze started with Hilton. He described how a heavily intoxicated man had once cornered him after a show with those words. That made him realise that, as long as South Africans can braai, they’re pleased as punch.
He mocked South African ways when it comes to braaiing. “At 23:00, you gooi nog ‘n dop. The meat is still on its way,” he said. “Another thing South Africans do, is to use way too much wood. We burn 27 Indian forests when we braai,” he joked.
Hilton proved that no comedian had to be vulgar in order to be funny. He entertained locals with witty, tasteful comedy and Mbombela hopes to see him again soon.
