Durban Westville Correctional facility under ministerial scrutiny
Minister Ronald Lamola has immediately instructed the relevant officials in the Department of Correctional Services to furnish him with a report.
Two shocking videos from the Durban Westville Correctional facility have emerged, wherein one shows inmates openly doing drugs and the other shows correctional officials appearing to be handing weapons to inmates, and instigating them to fight, Rising Sun Overport reports.
Minister Ronald Lamola has immediately instructed the relevant officials in the Department of Correctional Services to furnish him with a report which will among others explain: “Who were the officials on duty in both instances? Whether the officials have been subjected to any disciplinary process? Whether a case has been opened with the South African Police Service for the possession and or dealing of drugs?”
“This report must be made available as soon as it is practicably possible. We are not a lawless state. Moreover, institutions which are meant to rehabilitate inmates, cannot be a hive of lawlessness,” said Minister Lamola.
The minister said there is no place in society for officials in critical institutions like correctional services, who have no regard for the law.
“Should the investigation find that a violation of any policy and law has taken place, there will be serious ramifications for the individuals concerned. Our society demands the highest level of discipline and accountability from the criminal justice system as a whole,” concluded Minister Lamola.
