Modikwa puts health and fitness first

The workers were advised on ways of living a healthy lifestyle

ONVERWACHT – Last week Modikwa Platinum Mine ensured its workers were tested for a variety of diseases. The mine organised a health and wellness week aimed at eradicating illnesses at the mine.

On September 19, the last day of the wellness week, more than 350 miners queued for blood pressure, waist circumference, blood sugar, HIV/Aids, eye and cholesterol testing. The workers were also advised on ways of living a healthy lifestyle. Most were encouraged to reduce alcohol intake while others were told to quit smoking and to start exercising.

Spokesman for the mine Mr Reginald Kgoedi said it took pride in its workers.” Our main objective is to take care of our employees. It is the community; we wish to take care off. We realised that some of our workers suffer from chronic diseases, and decided to introduce this campaign, now they will be able to get medical attention. I hope they will share their results with their respective families.”

Mr Fanie Makola, a miner told Steelburger/Lydenburg News he was happy the mine came with this campaign. “I am glad because I know my status, I also know the level of my cholesterol. I will continue living a healthy and clean life”

The wellness team were well received by the mine and the staff members, from the top management to the truck drivers and miners. The mine plans to have more health initiatives in the future.
