Pupils generous with their blood

Pupils from Nelspruit Private College were generous with their blood last week.

NELSPRUIT – A group of 16 pupils of Nelspruit Private College braved the needle to donate blood last Friday. The schoolchildren who fulfilled the South African National Blood Service’s (SANBS) requirements each received a certificate and gift for donating for the first time.

The college is one of numerous schools in the area that the SANBS mobile team visits once a term. It also goes to businesses and schools in Barberton, Lydenburg and Burgersfort.

Currently the blood service has only 3,1 days’ supply instead of the five days which it needs to safely provide to South Africa’s needs. Donors can donate blood every 56 days but are asked to commit to donating four times a year. All of them are urged to help save a life by donating blood as soon as they are able. One unit of blood can save up to three lives.

In Nelspruit blood can be donated at SANBS branches at Riverside Mall and on the corner of Banket and Madiba, as well as the mobile team. There is also a branch in Lydenburg.
