New hope for Johanna Drive resealing in Mbombela

The long-awaited resealing of Johanna Drive has moved to the next phase, with the City of Mbombela currently appointing a contractor while continuing routine pothole repairs in the meantime.

The long-awaited resealing of Johanna Drive has officially entered the next phase and the City of Mbombela (CoM) is in the process of appointing a suitable contractor to undertake the work.

According to the CoM’s spokesperson, Joseph Ngala, the tender had already been advertised and the municipality is looking to find a qualified service provider.

“In the meantime, we will continue with routine maintenance, including pothole repairs on Johanna Drive, to ensure a smoother flow of traffic,” he promised.

He said the CoM is aware of growing frustration among motorists who have been calling for urgent intervention.

“At this stage, I cannot provide a timeframe as we are still in the process of securing a contractor. These processes take time, but the matter is being treated as urgent. I am aware that motorists want the road to be resealed as soon as possible,” he added.

Background: Johanna Drive is a key route in Mbombela, frequently used by travellers and local residents. The deteriorating condition has not only slowed traffic, but also raised safety concerns and increased vehicle maintenance costs for road users.

Over time, the road deteriorated significantly, with potholes and surface damage becoming a serious concern for motorists.

Residents and motorists have repeatedly raised the issue with the municipality, urging swift action to restore the road to a safer and more reliable condition.

The resealing project is therefore seen as a critical intervention to improve traffic flow and enhance road safety.

Thea Rix, ward councillor for the area, said she is aware of the new plans to upgrade Johanna Drive as it was included in the Integrated Development Plan.

“I hope they speed up the process so the rebuilding can start,” she replied.
